Cannabis Lenders Insiders Validate Private-Credit Marks
Leadership of two related cannabis-lending funds bought about $1.7 million near carrying values on the same day
John Mazarakis, who runs the Chicago Atlantic lending complex, bought $566,400 of Chicago Atlantic BDC as a 10% owner and $256,325 of Chicago Atlantic Real Estate Finance as executive chairman on the same day. The BDC co-CIO added $420,807 and the REIT co-CEO added $468,225, bringing leadership buying across the two cannabis-lending vehicles to about $1.7 million, all near reported marks. Coordinated personal purchases by the people who set those marks are a direct read that private-credit carrying values are not inflated.
| Instrument | Side | Target | Reason |
|---|---|---|---|
| CCAP | Long | We believe same-day open-market buying by the 10% owner and the co-CIO, totaling about $987,000 near reported marks, is a strong endorsement that the BDC’s cannabis private-credit book is marked fairly and remains attractive versus the share price. | |
| REFI | Long | We believe clustered buying of about $725,000 by the executive chairman and co-CEO of the cannabis mortgage REIT, executed near carrying values, supports the case that the loan book and dividend capacity are underappreciated. |
