Rare-Earth Magnets as the Humanoid Bottleneck

Conviction: 70% · Horizon: 4Y · 2026-08-20
Humanoid scale-up is gated by magnets, so Western mine-to-magnet names offer more upside than robot OEMs.

Every humanoid joint, actuator, and motor needs rare-earth magnets, and China still owns about 90% of that supply chain. As humanoid production tries to scale through 2027-2030, the binding constraint is magnet feedstock, processing, and manufacturing rather than robot design. Western mine-to-magnet capacity is being built to close that gap, which is a longer-dated setup with large upside if domestic supply actually comes online.

Instrument Side Target Reason
MP Long MP is the largest rare-earth producer in the West, so it is the most direct way to own the magnet feedstock that every humanoid joint, actuator, and motor will need as production scales.
USAR Long USA Rare Earth is the higher-risk, higher-upside Western rare-earth and magnet name, positioned for outsized gains if domestic heavy-rare-earth and magnet capacity actually comes online into the humanoid ramp.
ALOY Long REalloys is focused on processing and manufacturing the finished magnets themselves, which is the scarcest, China-dominated step of the chain and the actual bottleneck for humanoid motors.
